Intuitive Investment Portfolio Tracking

The Problem

Africa’s Pocket, a digital financial partner for ambitious Africans, had a dashboard that wasn’t doing its job.

🤔 Users couldn’t easily tell how much they had invested, earned, or how close they were to reaching their financial goals.
📊 The hero section focused on income and goal setup, while investment performance was hidden in secondary sections.
🎯 Goal cards had confusing hierarchies, making it unclear what was invested vs. what was still needed.
❔ The dashboard also showed goals users hadn’t contributed to — cluttering the space and creating decision fatigue.

This lack of clarity led to more customer support inquiries, fewer repeat investments, and slower user engagement.

My Approach

As both Product Manager and Product Designer, I led the end-to-end process — from user research to launch — collaborating with a UX/UI Designer and Developer.

Here’s how we turned confusion into clarity:

1. Audited the dashboard UX and gathered user feedback to identify friction points and gaps in the user journey.

2. Restructured the dashboard layout to prioritize what returning investors cared about most: total balance, earnings, and active goals.

3. Redesigned goal cards with clearer hierarchy, personalized names, and a visual traffic light system (green/yellow/red) to help users know which goals needed attention.

4. Tested three dashboard versions with real users through usability sessions and internal dogfooding, ensuring our solution aligned with user needs before development.

5. Scoped development work in Jira, prioritized features, and managed the release to 16,000+ users.

The Impact

💸 49.4% increase in returning investor investments — users came back and invested more after launch.
📉 50% drop in manual statement requests — the new dashboard gave users the clarity they needed, reducing reliance on support, giving the team 20+ hours back per week

Final Designs

🚀 Clear portfolio overview:

The hero section now displays total portfolio balance, broken into investments & earnings, alongside the top two goal cards. Users can make quick investments confidently.

Goal cards now feature a clearer hierarchy, personalized goal names (with emojis 🎉), and a traffic light system to signal progress: green (on track), yellow (falling behind), red (urgent attention needed).

Key Learnings

📖 Testing with real users is essential
Our internal team found early designs “smart,” but user testing told a different story. External validation helped us simplify and clarify.

📖 Simplicity beats sophistication
We initially added a graph to the hero section — thinking it would impress users. But feedback showed it caused more confusion than value. Removing it created a cleaner and more effective layout.
